A very successful professional development initiative for educators, the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) was created in British Columbia, Canada in Since then, hundreds of educators have served as ISW Facilitators offering ISWs in colleges, institutes, universities, polytechnics, hospitals, government departments, non-profits, and training organizations around the world. Douglas Kerr developed the original Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) Handbook for Participants in /9 for use in ISW Facilitator Development Workshops. This Handbook accompanies the Instructional Skills Workshop Program and is not meant to be used as a “stand alone” text. The Instructional Skills Workshop Online (ISW-O) has been developed to address the needs of Western instructors who teach online. It offers participants the opportunity to explore, in very practical and hands-on ways, the conditions that give rise to powerful eLearning experiences among students. The Instructional Skills Workshop is offered within a small group setting and is designed to enhance the teaching effectiveness of both new and experienced educators. During the 3-day (hour) workshop, participants design and conduct three "mini-lessons" and receive verbal, written and video feedback from the other participants who have. Instructional Skills Workshops (ISWs) are conducted in small groups with no more than four participants. Participants will meet each other and their instructor through the Learning Hub (BCIT's learning management system) in a live, synchronous session.
